Welcome to the Maine Institute for Public Safety Innovation

Introducing our new name: Maine Institute for Public Safety Innovation (formerly Maine Community Policing Institute/MCPI)

We want to assure you that we are not altering our structure nor reducing our services! The new name actually represents an expansion of activity to reflect the growth in scope and activities that our institute has undergone over the last few years. We have projects and partnerships that involve all aspects of the criminal justice system and other public safety entities, to include fire departments and emergency responders. We take pride in being at the cutting edge of issues involving the safety of our communities and our innovation is a result of looking outside the system for citizen input and creativity in solving the problems we face in the 21st century.

On behalf of the staff and the University of Maine at Augusta, we look forward to serving you in the future. - A. Richard Mears, Executive Director

About MIPSI

The Maine Institute for Public Safety Innovation (MIPSI) is a division of The University of Maine at Augusta. Our mission is to deliver education, training and technical assistance on the Community Oriented Policing philosophy, components, and strategies.

MIPSI is positioned as a central resource for neighborhoods, communities, and law enforcement agencies in the dissemination of Community Policing information.

How We Came to Be

Originally funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services in 1997, MIPSI has evolved into a self-sustaining organization through the support of the Maine State Legislature and the Maine Judicial Branch.

Education

In partnership with UMA, MIPSI has designed a 21-Credit Certificate in Community Policing. As part of the Criminal Justice program offered at the University, this certificate program has been designed for those who are considering pursuing a college degree, but who need to quickly develop marketable skills. Students earning a certificate may transfer credits to the Associate or Bachelor Degree programs in Criminal Justice or Administration of Justice.

Training

Today, communities across Maine and the U.S. are actively engaged in Community Policing. Community Policing is an integral part of combating crime and improving the quality of life in the nation’s cities, towns and rural areas. MIPSI training programs and products include Basic and Executive Level Community Policing classes, Neighborhood Organizing, Community Policing Publications, Resource Materials, Seminars, Conferences, and Technical Assistance to Police Agencies and Community Groups. MIPSI will provide guest speakers, facilitators and instructors to requesting organizations. Most training, education and technical assistance is delivered free of charge in the State of Maine.

Technical Assistance

MIPSI offers technical assistance and expertise to agencies and organizations who wish to promote Community Policing initiatives within their communities. Such assistance includes, but is not limited to programming for schools, community surveys, neighborhood watch organizing, specialized Community Policing training, and more.

Our primary goal at MIPSI is to provide high quality education and information in support of effective and professional Community Policing in Maine. MIPSI is a group of dedicated public service professionals and academicians with an extensive background in policing. We are committed to providing top-notch training for police and citizens.
